Altador
Despite having difficulty shaking off their underdog status, Altador has always remained a well-spirited and sporting team, important virtues for a worthy host of the Altador Cup. The team has yet to leave its mark on the higher tiers however, barely avoiding last place when they finished seventeenth last year.
Altador's record in Yooyuball and the Cup's side games is fairly strong when compared to that of its immediate peers, providing a firm foundation for steady improvements in the team's performance. The team's fan base is small, tightly knit, and has great sportsmanship, all traits which could translate to excellent coordination and applied strategies in the future.
Nevertheless, in its present state Team Altador still lacks the strength to push itself higher in the standings. There are plenty of teams out there, most of which have more solid Yooyuball and side game records, standing between Altador and the Cup that is their namesake. It may be a while yet before this team is in good enough shape to take them all down.

Brightvale
Known as an unremarkable underdog for much of their time in the Cup, Brightvale showed the beginnings of greatness early in last year's season, playing to par with many of the tournament's recognised top teams. The brief spurt of glory didn't last long however, and the team ended the season in thirteenth place - but not before clearly demonstrating their potential.
Brightvale's Yooyuball game is reasonably strong for an underdog team. Coupled with the team's decent side game clout, this makes them a heavyweight contender at the lower levels of the leaderboard, and indeed a major threat right up to the tournament's top tiers when it comes to some side games. When Team Brightvale manages to organise and pull its complete game plan together however, it is truly a sight to behold - the team definitely has the potential to make its mark much higher up in the standings.
Brightvale isn't the only team with potential however, and before they can distinguish themselves, they will have to develop one of the key traits of the Cup's established powerhouses: endurance. The team has so far been unable to sustain itself in top form for long. Until they can strategise, coordinate, and motivate effectively and consistently, it will still be hard for them to get ahead of their peers.

Darigan Citadel
Known as an extremely powerful team since the early days of the Altador Cup, last year Darigan Citadel began to recover from the lull that tends to affect cup-winning teams. They remained fairly strong in side games, and very strong in the all-important game of Yooyuball, throughout the double round-robin. The team struggled slightly in the finals, but still managed to finish the season ranked third.
This year the Citadel looks set to fully re-establish its reputation as a consistent powerhouse - the team has had a large, established fan base since the beginning of the Cup, and it shows: their strong side game play and downright dangerous Yooyuball skill are unlikely to subside any time soon.
Consistency was one of Darigan's strong points throughout much of last year, and it's a debatable point whether their loss in the play-offs was the result of fatigue, or simply the team lacking enough overall Yooyuball punch to level with the top two powerhouses. Either way, the team's finals performance will be a particularly critical factor for them this year.

Faerieland
As the poster team for the Altador Cup's underdogs, Faerieland is often the first name that springs to mind when analysts are asked to pick a candidate for the bottom tier. Most analysts will quickly set this name aside however, when they recall the team's performance last year. Faerieland managed to top three other teams in AC V, finishing in fifteenth place with a Yooyuball record not far behind that of teams ranked ninth and tenth.
Faerieland's overall statistical record isn't actually that bad for an underdog. Critics of the team often assert that it has a high proportion of younger players with a limited grasp of the Altador Cup and how to effectively support the team, inhibiting the team's ability to perform as a whole. It's easy to forget that at the core of this fan base is a group of loyal, dedicated, and passionate players. Even when their team took pounding after pounding, and in the face of poor behaviour from bigger teams, Faerieland's resolve never faltered. If the Cup could be won on sportsmanship alone, this is the team that would win it.
Unfortunately for Faerieland, it's Yooyuball, not sportsmanship, that is the deciding factor in the Altador Cup, and the team's Yooyuball record still falls short of championship material. With The Faeries' Ruin, one of the most critically acclaimed Neopets plots to date, it's certain that Faerieland's supporter base will see rapid growth this year. A larger fan base may bring many benefits in the long run, but history has shown that an abrupt influx of players decreases a team's proportion of very active players. It is this proportion that decides whether a team can perform effectively or not, and it seems doubtful that Faerieland is in a position to turn this influx of new players into raw athletic power. Forged deep within Team Faerieland is the spirit of a true champion, and sooner or later the time will come for the Faeries to show their mettle, but alas, that time is not yet.

Haunted Woods
As the first champions of the Altador Cup (at least, the first in a thousand years or so), Team Haunted Woods was hit hard by the effects of the 'Curse of the Cup', but nevertheless remains one of the tournament's most dangerous powerhouses when awakened. The team suffered the misfortune of just missing a spot in the second tier last year, after which low morale dampened their performance in the finals, pushing them down to twelfth place overall.
Make no mistake however: this team was, and still is a very serious second tier contender. Their Yooyuball performance is almost on par with most top-tier teams, definitely among the best in the tournament. The only thing holding them back from being a championship contender (statistically speaking) is lackluster side game performance, and even then not by much.
Despite all this potential, Team Haunted Woods has still struggled to hold on to positions in the Cup's upper tiers. Spurts of low morale, combined with a relatively small supporter base, makes it difficult for the team to maintain their very impressive level of performance throughout the entirety of the double round-robin, as well as the finals. When they do reach the top of their game however, they're a fair match for even the most established powerhouses.

Kiko Lake
While undoubtedly one of the Cup's underdogs, having ranked in the tournament's lower tiers consistently in past years, Kiko Lake is often drastically underestimated by analysts and opponents alike, to devastating effect. They may not seem like much, ranking only sixteenth in AC V, but the Kiko Lakers are a shrewd and focused band of indomitable athletes, undeterred by even seemingly unbeatable powerhouses.
This team is arguably the hardiest and most dangerous underdog in the Cup. Their fan base is likely the smallest of any team, but it is tight-knit, determined, and well organised. The result: a team that can develop a strategy tailored precisely to the team it is facing, and execute that strategy with terrifying tenacity.
Kiko Lake has a remarkable number of spectacular upsets to their name, but they haven't yet been able to turn those upsets into enough consistent victories to climb up the leaderboard. The fact remains that their strategies seem to be mostly dictated as a response to the opposing team, without much room for Kiko Lake's own goals. But while they may not be a championship contender, the Kikos remain the one team who can strike fear (or at least concern) into the hearts of the powerhouses' smarter strategists, and that's quite a feat.

Krawk Island
Krawk Island is one of the Cup's classic powerhouses, with lots of muscle across the board, provided by a massive, hard-playing fan base. The team took a tumble in last year's tournament however, brought down by the usual issues that afflict first-place teams, and ranking seventh overall.
Nevertheless, Krawk Island looks set to make a comeback this year. Of all the candidates for the hotly-contested rank four foothold in the first tier (a position which always seems to be decided at the very last minute in the double round-robin), this team seems the most likely to edge ahead of the rest. Krawk Island has a consistently strong record across the board in almost every tournament to date (although their side game play slipped slightly last year), and consistent strength usually equates to a lot of sweeps, and a lot of the crucial rank points that a team needs to make its mark on the standings.
The Cup is not won by consistency alone however - Yooyuball is the deciding sport of the Altador Cup, and especially critical when it comes to the finals. Team Krawk Island may have strength across the board, but it's unlikely that they'll be able to overwhelm other top tier teams in the staple game. A lot of the team's all-stars moved on after their victory in AC IV, and this is a loss that may be quite difficult to recover from.

Kreludor
Kreludor has a small fan base relative to the other powerhouses, but to date that's never been much of a hindrance for this team of rising stars. Last year they were in the running for tier one from the very start, and they hung onto their position in that tier with an unshakable kreludite grip. They were unable to outmatch Team Lost Desert when it came to the finals however, but they still went home ranked a satisfying second.
Historically, Kreludor has been strong all across the board, rated highly in both Yooyuball and side games. Despite being smaller than most other top teams, Kreludor's fan base is still substantial. It is also dedicated, well-balanced and has great sportsmanship, all traits that make Kreludor a formidable opponent on the field throughout the cup.
However, despite their consistent strength in the Altador Cup, Kreludor has always been missing that slight extra kick they need to get ahead of their top-ranked opposition in Yooyuball. When it comes to the finals, their Yooyuball game has tended to be ever so slightly weaker than that of other championship contenders. This weakness, combined with the influx of less active players that usually affects teams which rank highly in the tournament, has a very real chance of hurting Kreludor's performance this year.

Lost Desert
Another one of the Cup's classic powerhouses, Team Lost Desert has been a championship contender since the early days of the tournament - and contend they did, earning a position in last year's tier one, and going on to become the champions of the fifth Altador Cup.
Apart from some occasional side game inconsistency, the Lost Desert has always been a force to be reckoned with all across the board, with spectacular records in most side games, as well as the ever-critical Yooyuball. The team has an extremely large, hard-playing fan base that does not look to be going away any time soon. To put it simply: the support for Team Lost Desert is incredibly strong.
Alas, no team in the history of the Altador Cup, no matter how strong they were, has been able to withstand the inevitable effects of what is known as the 'Curse of the Cup'. After achieving a championship victory, a team's support base will grow considerably, but this growth will bring with it a large number of less active players, which will have a significant negative impact on the team's performance. Additionally (and arguably more importantly), many of the team's all-star supporters may move on to help out another team after winning the Cup with the Lost Desert, leaving the team missing much of its key support. These factors, along with the remarkable number of strong teams pushing up towards the first and second tiers this year, mean that Team Lost Desert will have a very hard time retaining a top spot.

Maraqua
Maraqua, once a small team, is now a recognised powerhouse with a spirited and very dedicated fan base. The team managed to keep analysts on their toes last year, coming back from a poor start to go head to head with many of the Cup's top tier teams, earning them almost enough points to make the first tier, although they slipped behind late in the second round-robin. The team performed well in the finals, eventually topping the second tier at fifth place.
Team Maraqua is one of the favourites for this year's Cup, with their strong supporter base and excellent record over the past two years as the main factors going for them. It's also possible that one or more of the Altador Cup's travelling bands of all-star players will be joining Maraqua this year, which would definitely improve their chances of victory.
Maraqua still has some lingering weaknesses however: one of the most important is their side game play. While impressive, the team has yet to show the sweep capacity required to match other top-tier powerhouses. Maraqua is well known for its 'Piranha mode', a nickname for the team's almost unstoppable second-round performance, often carrying through to the Cup's finals. This strength, however, also highlights another one of the team's weaknesses - Maraqua still lacks consistency to a degree, and the team's lack of endurance may well be its downfall, leaving open the possibility that they will be unable to reach the first tier for yet another year.

Meridell
Meridell has been on the list of championship contenders for a long time now - too long, some analysts would argue. Nevertheless, there's no doubt that when Meridell brings its full might to bear, other teams will fall. The team has yet to measure up to its full potential however, and finished at the bottom of the second tier last year - not entirely ungraceful, but still disappointing for many of the team's fans.
By all rights, Meridell has all the makings of a serious powerhouse. They are formidable opponents in Yooyuball, fairly strong in side games, and have a large fan base bursting with potential. The team has a notable tendency to pull off surprise victories against opponents when they least expect it, a trait normally attributed only to the tougher underdog teams. They are a dangerous team to underestimate, and still a dangerous team even when they aren't underestimated.
As far as championship contention goes however, Meridell still does not have quite enough. Their Yooyuball record is definitely top tier material, but they need more strength in side games to get them enough points to make the first tier. Most importantly, the team lacks consistency - not an unusual weakness, but one that can be crippling near the top of the leaderboard.

Moltara
Still the newest team on the block as far as the Altador Cup goes, Moltara nevertheless benefits from a lot of popularity, possessing a large and enthusiastic fan base. This popularity may have done the team more harm than good last year however, with a high proportion of less active players weighing the team down to eighteenth place.
Things look brighter for Team Moltara in the coming tournament, as their supporters have gained at least one season's worth of experience, and improved in terms of organisation, focus, and general skill. Many of the players who were missing dedication and loyalty will have moved on, and the team may even gain a few more of those key all-stars to drive their engines a little harder. All in all, Moltara looks to be in good shape to get out there and start winning some matches.
With only a single tourney's worth of matches to tally data from, it's very hard to identify any trends or say how well Moltara will perform statistically in AC VI. Their record from their first year in the tourney is, to say the least, a little rough around the edges. While spectacular improvements in the span of a single year aren't uncommon in the Altador Cup, they're not too frequent either, and it's unlikely that Moltara will advance far in the standings without more time to develop.

Mystery Island
One of the Altador Cup's most unpredictable wild cards, Mystery Island packs an unstoppable Yooyuball punch matched by no other team on the field - but not all the time. This inconsistency gave the team a tough time last year, and they finished the season in fourteenth place.
Mystery Island is an unmistakable powerhouse when it comes to the Altador Cup's staple sport. Despite their small fan base, this team's Yooyuball game can outshine that of any other team in the tournament. Even the best of the Cup's top tier powerhouses can fall swiftly to Mystery Island's Yooyuball play.
This team's critical weakness, however, is consistency. They simply don't remain at the top of their game for long enough to achieve many significant streaks, which makes it hard for them to acquire key match points, and to stay in the running throughout crucial finals matches. The team's fairly small pool of players also has a tough time covering all the Cup's side games effectively, making it even more difficult to obtain enough points to scale the leaderboard.

Roo Island
While they may no longer be merely the small team from the depths of the rankings, Roo Island has always possessed the underdog spirit, coming in from behind to take down teams that, for all intents and purposes, should have crushed them easily. The Roos rebounded quickly from their lackluster performance two years ago, shaking off the winner's curse and fighting their way all the way up into tier one. They were unable to make much headway in the finals however, and finished fourth overall.
While Roo Island's fan base has grown in past years, their core supporters have remained lively and loyal, bringing a dedicated game spirit and impeccable sportsmanship to a team that would otherwise be fairly unremarkable. The Roos have shown in the past that it's possible for a small team to make it to the top on determination and energy alone, and with the team's growing supporter base, it's likely that they're here to stay in the first tier.
Team Roo Island is, however, slightly lacking in terms of raw Yooyuball power, at least when matched up against other top-tier favourites. Additionally, the team's side game performance is fair, but not outstanding across the board. This team may not quite have the strength to outperform its peers just yet.

Shenkuu
Despite their reputation as an inconsistent powerhouse, Shenkuu has ranked consistently in the first tier for the majority of their time in the Altador Cup. However, last year saw the team take an unprecedented dip in the rankings, taking analysts completely by surprise with their eleventh place finish.
Last year's disappointment aside, Shenkuu is recognised by analysts as slow-starting but strong once they get going. The team's performance tends to be fairly mediocre during the first round of the tournament, then pick up rapidly as the Cup enters the second phase of the round-robin. Once Shenkuu gets started, it's nearly impossible to stop, with championship-level performance across the board, from Yooyuball to every last side game.
The reason for Team Shenkuu's sudden drop in performance is a matter of debate. Many analysts believe that one of Neopia's largest bands of travelling all-star players arrived to aid Shenkuu a couple of years ago. When these travelling all-stars left, it's possible that many of Shenkuu's all-stars departed from the team to join them. This, combined with an influx of less active players that chose Shenkuu because it was one of last year's top favourites, could explain the team's slump. If this is the case, then it could be a while before Shenkuu recovers its top form.

Terror Mountain
A fairly new team as far as championship potential goes, Terror Mountain established itself as one of the lower tiers' finest in last year's tournament. The team has a very strong side game record for its tier, and a fair Yooyuball record as well, managing to advance to ninth place overall in last year's Cup.
Terror Mountain is a reasonably solid side game team overall. Their current speciality is Shootout Showdown: to describe their skill in this game as 'excellent' is an understatement when their near-perfect thirty-six win streak last year is taken into account. The team also has a lot more punch in Yooyuball than most people give them credit for, capable of pulling off upsets against teams much higher on the leaderboard. This team bears many of the signs of a developing powerhouse.
However, there isn't a whole lot of legroom in the first or second tiers this year, and Team Terror Mountain is unlikely to be ready to strike further up in this year's tourney. The team's Yooyuball play will need to improve significantly before they're in a position to battle their way into the second tier, and that improvement will only come with the trials of time.

Tyrannia
Team Tyrannia has long been the Altador Cup's powerhouse of side games, matching or beating the majority of the tournament's top tier teams in everything but Yooyuball. Competition for the second tier was fierce last year however, and the team was unable to rise past the third tier in the standings, although their side game points and a couple of hard-fought Yooyuball matches saw them securing tenth place.
Great side game performance is a given for Tyrannia, especially in their sport of choice, Slushie Slinger. Despite their apparent focus on their speciality game, the team is actually well-balanced and very difficult to topple across all the side games. This allows them to come away from most matches with a point or so, even if their Yooyuball isn't quite on par with many of the teams they face.
Yooyuball, however, is still the staple sport of the tournament, and essential to any team with their sights set on the Cup. Tyrannia's Yooyuball record is fair, but not especially strong, and this is a weakness that will impede the team's advance in the standings for now.

Virtupets
Historically a small, lower-tier team, Virtupets nevertheless possesses one of the Altador Cup's most loyal and well organised fan bases. Last year, the team showed just what organisation, loyalty, and sportsmanship can achieve, climbing up the ranks to achieve sixth place overall.
Every year of the Altador Cup seems to have its fledgeling powerhouses: teams on the brink of advancing from being a powerful underdog to a serious contender for the top tier, and from there, the Cup itself. This year is no exception. Team Virtupets' ability to develop a solid strategy, and then rally its supporters to carry that strategy through, is something which many fan groups strive to achieve, but few can match consistently. Taking this into account, the team's relatively small fan base can actually be considered an advantage, as a more tight-knit group allows for easier communication and motivation.
Like any fledgeling powerhouse however, Virtupets will need to work on its raw performance as well as its strategy if it's to have a chance at tier one. Sooner or later the team will probably bring up its side game performance to a consistent level across the board, and crank up their Yooyuball play a few notches as well, but that's not going to happen all at once. For now, it's unlikely that they'll cross the boundary into the realm of the championship contenders just yet.

And that's all for our predictions. There's one more thing to remember however: these predictions are guaranteed to be wrong. Well, maybe not completely wrong, but the chances of them being perfectly (or even mostly) correct are miniscule. Statistics and analysis don't determine how well a team will do in the Altador Cup - the team's dedicated, hard-playing members do. So go ahead, join a team that you care about, and take that team right to the top of the leaderboard!
Best of luck to all participants this year. May the best team (your team, naturally) win, and have a load of fun while you're at it!
